He was instrumental in negotiating with the fierce Cherokee Indian tribe to allow settlers on the lands, which at that time in history was not always easy. There were no courthouses at that time, so judicial proceedings were conducted in a local barn, where Sevier would hold meetings, hearing and such. Through out history, many rumors came about. It’s rumored the barn where courts were held had fleas and the lawyers were constantly tired of itching from the fleas, then burned the barn courthouse down.
Make sure you get a chance to visit the Sevierville historical courthouse. You can also see the early Dolly Parton statue on your visit while you are visiting the courthouse and surrounding areas. if you didn’t already know, Sevierville is where the famous Dolly Parton was born and raised.
