Astors Beechwood Mansion -
Beechwood was built in 1851 and William Backhouse Astor, Jr., purchased the
mansion in 1881, and made it a hub of social retreat for New York Society for
25 years. Whether sneaking into the servants' quarters or ascending the grand
staircase, you will believe, just for a moment, that you have stepped back to
a time gone by.
The Breakers – Take a tour of the grandest of Newport's summer "cottages" and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family's social and financial preeminence in turn of the century America. The Breakers was open to the public beginning in 1948 to raise funds for the Preservation Society. In 1972, the Preservation Society purchased the house from the Vanderbilt heirs. Today, the house is designated a National Historic Landmark.
Tennis Hall of Fame – If you are a tennis buff, you don’t want to miss a trip to the Tennis Hall of Fame, located inside the Newport Casino. This is the historical site of the first US National Championship in 1881 and the site is filled with historical tennis information and exhibits.
Fort Adams – History comes alive in an excursion that is educational and fun for the whole family. Take a short water taxi ride across the harbor to Fort Adams, the largest coastal fortification in the United States. From 1824 to 1950 Fort Adams housed generations of soldiers; today it still stands ready for tourist and visitor enjoyment.
